Zentangle® Retreats

View a YouTube, talented tangle artists share wonderful ideas and projects from the Zentangle Retreat sponsored by Angie Vangalis CZT.

In the video I am sharing this week you will see many of the attendees from the CZT Marketing Retreat showcasing some of their talents and also giving us really good ideas on new “tangle projects”, many of them would be perfect for holiday gift giving. Bonnie Pewterbaugh creates beautiful scarves with an ancient art form called Katazomi,  a paste resist technique using handmade stencils. Sampada Agarwal  has a great idea for turning kitchen hot pads and cup towels into a one of a kind gift set. Many other fabulous ideas are on the video.
Zentangle is growing so fast, it is a joy to watch the spread of this phenomenal art form. There are classes, workshops and retreats all over the world. This is Angie’s third annual retreat and a wonderful gathering opportunity for Certified Zentangle Teachers. A time for meeting like-minded friends, and sharing ideas, new projects and our love for Zentangle.
One of my favorite workshops to teach is tangling on small canvas bags, I taught this at Angie’s retreat. These are so fun to do, I use the Pentel Gel Roller pen for Fabric. These would be perfect to use as little gift bags for holiday gifts. Last year on my blog I featured some extraordinary beaded Christmas ornaments from Susan and Lucie Meeks. There is a YouTube on the Design Originals channel you can review to get you in the mood to create your own “tangled tree”.

‘The Beauty of Zentangle’ coming soon in German

View a YouTube, get a peak inside ‘The Beauty of Zentangle’ as well as other Zentangle® books and learn the basics of the art form.

The YouTube I posted this week serves as an introduction to the wonderful world of tangling. ‘The Beauty of Zentangle’ has been chosen by a European publisher to be translated into German. I was asked to do a promotional video for them in order to present the story of Zentangle to a German audience. They plan on translating some of the other Zentangle books as well.  Of course I can’t speak a bit of German, the book will be translated with ‘voice over’ in German. I can not wait to see me Deutsch Sprechen (speaking German).

I was thrilled to work with so many talented artists on ‘The Beauty of Zentangle’. The book really is a wonderful example of what artists from all over the world are accomplishing with Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIA’s). Co-author, Cindy Shepard and I will be hosting a book signing party at Sparks Studio in Arlington, Texas on Saturday,  October 26th.  Several other guest tangle artists featured in the book will be on hand to sign their pages as well. Books are available for purchase or bring your own copy – Cindy and I will be happy to sign them.
Paula Pillow teaching on an Open Play Day at Sparks Studio.
A Play Day party will also be held in conjunction with the book signing. Lots of fun, supplies and teachers to guide you through some great mini-workshops. Have you experimented with the Gelli Arts Printing Plates? We will be providing papers and fabrics and show you techniques to use to make your own Gelli Art. Experience making your own memory foam stamps, this unique product allows you to use almost anything as a basis for your stamp designs… we’ll show you how.
                         Play Day Activities
Make your own tiny Doodle Bug Book too – using watercolors, markers, stamps and images. The Play Day would not be complete without a Zentangle project, learn the basics of this amazing art form and new tangles. Take home a Micron pen, an official Zentangle tile, Gelli Art fabric and paper, and a memory stamp… all with your art. For more information you can visit the Sparks Studio website. Stop by and bring a friend!!

Intuitive Art Journals & Sketchbooks

View a YouTube, get some fun and useful tips to help create beautiful and interesting pages in your travel journal.

My favorite buzzword in the art world is “intuitive”, I love applying this word to my method of journaling. Intuitive is another word for instinctive. Art is instinctive for so many of us. We may get caught up in what we have learned is the “right way” to draw a horse or use watercolors but when you let yourself make art instinctively you often find your true self and artistic style. You are free to fill your sketchbooks and journals with whatever you are thinking of at that moment or dreaming of for the future.
I have kept personal sketch-journals for many years. Recorded in these valuable books are memories of travel, friends, family, events and ideas. In putting together the book ‘Ideas & Inspirations for Art Journals and Sketchbooks’  I get to share my techniques, thought processes and tips that have kept me inspired to journal these many years.
Teaching an Intuitive Art Journal class is another way I keep myself inspired to journal, I love seeing the wonderful art created by my students.  Student Cara Mozulski was so creative with her journal pages on elephants… I love the butterfly wings for elephant ears!
I taught this class at the Guadalupe Rubber Stamp Store and Artisan in Sante Fe, New Mexico this year.
TIP: Jot down October 17-19, 2014 on your calender – Artisan Expo will be in Santa Fe again (tons of discounted art supplies, lots of great teachers, and an opportunity to visit  Art Mecca for inspiration). I hope to see you there.
I will also be teaching ‘Intuitive Art Journals’ at Art and Soul in 2014. Hope to see some of you there, and keep journaling!

Yoga for the Brain Zentangle® Cards

View a YouTube, get an up close view of Sandy Steen Bartholomew’s new decks of ‘Yoga for the Brain – Tangle Cards’. Full of fun Zentangle® patterns.

The quirky, arty, multi-talented Sandy Steen Bartholomew has done it again. She has come up with the most adorable packs of ‘Tangle Cards’. You can choose from 4 different sets. Each set includes basic zentangle instructions, which makes it a great gift item for an aspiring artist. An index card is included with each deck listing the card number and tangle. The Kidz Edition has steps and strings especially for children, it even includes a card with variations on her cute Lilah Beans. For those who create their own tangles or want to have a deck devoted to their favorites the set of 20 blank tangle cards is perfect.
Why not host a Time to Tangle Party. Each person can select a random card from the deck of ‘Tangle Cards’ and draw it on a canvas cloth. My favorite tools to use for this is the Roc-Ion Multi-Purpose Cloth and Sakura Permapaque markers. Once you have finished the game you add a few coats of clear varnish to have a lovely wall or floor cloth.
Art and Soul in Portland runs from September 30 thru October 6. I am always excited to teach as well as take some classes from other fabulous artists. It was really heart warming to receive this email from one of my past students.

Joyce wrote to me… “Life has been pretty complicated since I took your class at Virginia Beach but you have started something!!  I have been painting  on cotton, and satin and making incredible art quilts.  Many many thanks for a great class and tons of inspiration!!  Attached are photos of art quilts I made based on quotes from The Little Prince by St. Exupere.  These are just a few of the painting I’ve done with Sharpie markers and alcohol. I am getting rave reviews — have sold some of my quilts already!!  THANK YOU!!”

Beautiful art quilts Joyce (joycerquilting@verizon.net),  thanks for sharing. I will be teaching this popular class “Dyeing with Sharpie Markers” at Art and Soul on October 2nd and also at Sparks Studio

Artist’s Treasure Necklace
Patinas for Brass, Copper & Iron!
Create beads, baubles, pendants and an art journal.. Add patina
to metals to ‘bloom’ overnight into rich colors… iron to rusty
orange, brass, bronze, and copper to verdigris. We’ll shape personal
‘amulets’ with molds, cutters, and basic tools. Some treasures are
durable resin-clay (better than polymer clay for this process). Other
‘relics’ are rolled and shaped metal and wire. Leave the class with a
collection of beads and baubles to string your own ‘Artist’s Treasure
. You will be amazed at the process!

Silk Scarves
Dyeing with Sharpie Markers
Take home THREE fabulously beautiful silk scarves (often selling
for $100 or more each in boutique shops)
with beautiful explosions of
color. The whole process of dyeing silk with Sharpie markers is
inspiring and fun. When the magic ingredient is added, it is exciting to
watch the colorful inks run, blend and bleed. Instead of working with
dye colors in separate messy pots, you can relax. Enjoy experimenting
with techniques – shibori, tie-dye, and free-form dyeing.

Zentangle® Art Gallery Show

View a YouTube, create a fun and simple Zentangle Accordian booklet. This simple project is great to use as a tangle reference, display or greeting card.

I am always excited and admittedly a little anxious when I agree to produce new art work for a gallery show. In July I was feature artist at Giddens Gallery of Fine Art in Grapevine, Texas and in September my art will be featured at Sparks Studio Gallery in Arlington, Texas. It is thrilling to have over 200 people meandering thru the gallery, talking about art and learning about Zentangle through the ZIA I had done for the show. It’s a real blessing when people actually purchase your art, six of my pieces sold.
Some of the success of the Zentangle Inspired Art for this show can be credited to the overwhelming inspiration I received from working with so many talented artists who submitted work for the book ‘The Beauty of Zentangle’.  This book will be available for purchase by late September, it can be pre-ordered from the Design Originals Website.
While I do other styles of work on canvas I focused entirely on what I could do with Zentangle and color for this show. Using black acrylic ink to create shapes and designs was the beginning of most of my pieces. I then tangled in between selected areas and used Golden fluid acrylics to add the glorious color. It was a fun process, I was able to create 30 new pieces to hang in the gallery.
More good news for Zentangle comes from across the ocean in the United Kingdom. Two popular craft magazines have nominated ‘The Joy of Zentangle’ for the Best New Craft Book 2013! You may cast your vote for ‘The Joy of Zentangle’ at the Craft Awards site.

Zentangle® Game

View a YouTube‘Game of Zentangle®‘. You’ll love this presentation of how to challenge yourself with easy prompts for drawing Tangles.

Here’s a YouTube on Zentangle® with a fun challenge for yourself. Often, when I am having trouble choosing which Tangle to put in which section, I pull out my ‘game’ and a pair of dice. I roll the dice and refer to the game. It is really helpful. The real challenge comes when I roll the exact same number twice – then I need to alter the assigned Tangle… larger, smaller, more lines, darker, lighter. This is the creative part.

Hope you have fun with the Game of Zentangle. Follow this link to print out the tangle game sheet, make as many game sheets as you like. A great way to expand your repertoire of “go to” tangle patterns. Fun for one or for a group of tanglers.

Zentangle® Makes NEWS!!

I love this video NEWS clip on Zentangle. It aired on a Pennsylvania TV show and was filmed at a class hosted by Fox Chapel Publishing. Cindy Fahs CZT is teaching the Zentangle method to a variety of students… men, women and yoga instructors. They all seem to have a love for the meditative drawing style.

Zentangle in the NEWS!!

It reinforces my belief that Zentangle is a growing and important art form to be shared with everyone – from the young to the old from the talented artist to those that believe they don’t have a creative bone in their body. As CZT’s we have all felt the exhilaration of giving the gift of creativity and love seeing the smiles form on the faces of students from all walks of life.

Sante Fe Travels & Inspiration

View a YouTube, great tips for making adorable hand-sewn felted frogs from Ana Arujo.

Veteran crafter Ana Arujo host of  ‘When Creativity Knocks’ is always coming up with fun and fabulous ideas. Her book ‘Felt from the Heart’ is no exception, it features more than 24 handmade stuffed animals, creatures, veggies and habitats. It’s a wonderful way to introduce children to basic stitching. Ana uses embroidery floss, mittens, and simple stitches to construct these adorable critters.
Visiting with my sister Amy in Sante Fe is something I make time for every year.  I love the food, the feel and the imagery of New Mexico. This year I also took the opportunity to teach six classes on Zentangle®, Journaling and Gelli Printing (at Guadalupe Rubber Stamps, Artisan Store and Perch Paperie in Santa Fe and Los Alamos). I also took a wonderful four day class from acrylics expert Sandra Duran Wilson. Amy and I had so much fun revisiting some of my favorite spots near Sante Fe.
El Rincon is one of the oldest trading posts in the area… it is filled with antiques and has a small museum inside as well.
When I travel I always take a lot of photos of doors, doorknobs and hardware.  Love this blue door!!
I love the ethereal quality of this photo, shot from the bottom of the steps of this pristine mission church in Laguna Pueblo. The church has beautifully carved wooden doors and white crosses everywhere. This photo inspires me to begin painting Southwest scenes again, I may even add a mysterious woman in each one.
The Pink Adobe is a favorite restaurant, they make absolutely wonderful Green Chile Enchildas. This large blue frame on the outside of the restaurant filled with primitive, colorful art caught my eye.
